In 1846, some black folks came up with a plan to protest slavery…

Chaos, comedy, and collusion resound when a group of black men conspire to steal the Liberty Bell before it can be rung on George Washington’s birthday on February 22, 1846.   This band of black folks meets in Philadelphia at the Golden Fleece Tavern to plot the confiscation of America’s icon of freedom.  What makes them think they can do it?  How in the world will they do it? Will the mystery of the Liberty Bell’s famous crack finally be solved?  Written and directed by Ted Lange, Let Freedom Ring is based on historical imagination and combines Lange’s signature comedy and drama as it reverberates issues of change and hope that still vibrate today.

Ted Lange is the author of twenty-three plays.   Let Freedom Ring is the second play in his historical trilogy.  George Washington’s Boy, the first play, was presented two years ago in Los Angeles and then in Winston-Salem, NC at the National Black Theatre Festival to rave reviews.   Lange’s ability to infuse modern traits into his historical characters makes history accessible and relevant to the viewers.  Lange’s plays bring audiences to their feet as they are not only entertained but also educated in a black historical viewpoint.  Lange, director, writer, and a prolific actor of stage and screen, is a graduate of London’s Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts, and recipient of the NAACP Renaissance Man Theatre Award.  Akin to  August Wilson’s repertoire, Lange’s plays have garnered numerous awards and been performed nationwide.  A history teacher once told Lange that history is written by the victors.  Lange’s Let Freedom Ring, resonates a tale of a true story …almost!
