A powerful Up close and Personal view of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s historic visit to New York City in the mid- 1980′s. Filled with rare footage of Fela, that gives us a glimpse of his lifestyle and creative musical process. Fela had just been released from prision with the help of Amnesty International. This political firebrand, music pioneer, and cultural leader came to New York to support their efforts to free all political prisoners.
Join us on an odyssey from Greenwich Village to Harlem where Fela was welcomed at a crowded press conference and a joyous reception, after a 17- year absence. Come backstage with Fela as he is embraced by many cultural luminaries. This was a defining moment for the legendary cultural warrior, as he headed into his final decade.
