Black History Month
Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X.Black History Month is a very important time for Americans of all races. It allows us to learn interesting facts about African American men and women that have made an impact on our everyday lives.
Most people do not receive information about black history except for during Black History Month.
In this month these people are educated on the history of African American inventors, record setters, barrier breakers, and heroes.
In my opinion we should not have to wait until February, the shortest month of the year, to celebrate black history.
Black history should be celebrated every day as a part of American history.
I believe the school systems are not doing a great job teaching students about black history.
I understand that there is a certain curriculum that has to be covered over the course of a year, but why can’t the curriculum include information about important figures in black history?
Going to school here in the Panhandle, African American history was never really taught except during Black History Month.
The problem with this is there is only a small amount of information that can be covered during this short month.
The information I received from school during Black History Month was not enough to educate me about the past of African Americans.
It was enough for the school to say they covered black history during Black History Month.
As I said before I understand there is a curriculum to be met, so I think people will have to get the black history education from elsewhere.
I was fortunate to be a part of a church that had programs in place that taught me about the history of blacks in America.
Every Wednesday night we would have a lesson from the Bible, and then we would have a lesson about important African American figures in the past.
My church emphasized the importance of knowing where you come from because you have to know where you came from to get where you want to go.
During Black History Month the black community puts programs together to celebrate black history.
Programs like this raise awareness for black history.
I don’t think people would ever hear facts about blacks if it were not for Black History Month.
Black History Month is important because it is the month when Americans of all races look back and remember all the things that have been accomplished by great African American men and women.
We not only remember the accomplishments of these great men and women, we celebrate how far we have come and we acknowledge the fact that the possibilities are endless for how far we can go.
